MAZDA’S new 6e electric liftback has secured a five-star ANCAP safety rating, recording 93 per cent scores for both adult and child occupant protection.
The five-star result applies to both locally available GT and Atenza grades, which went on sale in July priced from $49,990 plus on-road costs and $52,990 + ORC respectively.
ANCAP awarded the rear-wheel drive battery-electric model 37.39 points from a possible 40 for Adult Occupant Protection, equating to 93 per cent, with maximum scores recorded in side-impact and far-side-impact assessments.
Child Occupant Protection also scored 93 per cent, or 46.0 points from 49, while the Mazda recorded 74 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 79 per cent for Safety Assist.
ANCAP said the 6e is equipped as standard with dual frontal, side chest-protecting, curtain, and centre airbags, the latter designed to reduce the risk of injury between front-seat occupants in a side-impact collision.
Standard active-safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking with car-to-car, pedestrian and cyclist detection, junction and crossing functionality, back-over and head-on intervention.
Lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, emergency lane keeping, and speed-sign recognition are also standard across the range.
Mazda Australia national manager of product and business strategy Daniel Wakelam said the result provided an important endorsement for the brand’s first mainstream electric sedan.

The Chinese-built Mazda 6e uses a 78kWh lithium iron phosphate battery feeding a rear-mounted 190kW/290Nm electric motor, with Mazda claiming up to 560km of WLTP driving range and a 30-80 per cent DC recharge time of about 15 minutes.
The ANCAP rating applies to all Australian and New Zealand variants of the Mazda 6e and carries a 2025 date-stamp, expiring in December 2031.
