Heat and Air Conditioning

It takes more energy to keep the cabin warm during periods of extreme cold. Bumping up the heat for comfort while driving draws more energy from the battery. Similarly, blasting the air conditioner when it’s hot outside reduces range. Controlling the cabin and battery temperature is the biggest power drain, second to driving the vehicle.

While running the heat may drain the battery, heated seats generally use less energy. “Heated seats only need to power a small heating element underneath the upholstery, so they use less energy than the full heating system, which uses a fan to circulate air through the cabin,” said Kelley Blue Book Editor Chris Teague. “If your car has heated seats, they can help save a little battery life on cold commutes.”

The size of your EV, the total passenger load, and cargo load you carry all play a role in draining the battery. Batteries expend less energy to move lighter loads, so keep that in mind during your next road trip. Pack light if your goal is to stop less often to recharge. EV drivers wanting better battery efficiency can follow some of the same tips used in hypermiling with gas cars. For example, keeping unnecessary gear and heavy things, such as spare bags of dog food or cat litter, out of the vehicle can help extend the time between charging sessions.

A vehicle’s transmission is an incredibly complex component. A quick internet search for “transmission interior parts” returns an overwhelming number of images of assorted gears, clutches, converters, strange-looking bearings, and shift levers, all of which must work in harmony to get you down the road. The transmission transfers power from the engine to the wheels, so even minor issues can affect your vehicle’s safety and reliability.

If your vehicle has been making unusual noises or performing irregularly, you may be wondering if it’s time for a new transmission. While some transmission problems can be fixed with repairs, fluid service, or component replacement, others may signal the need for a complete transmission replacement. Transmission types can be categorized broadly as manual and automatic. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is another type, but we aren’t including it here.

Manual Transmissions

Manual transmissions require a host of ancillary components to facilitate gear changes. It is generally controlled by the clutch system, which disconnects the engine from the drivetrain to allow quick, smooth gear changes. Most clutch systems use a single clutch disc or a series of discs, and over time, these components will wear. If you press the accelerator pedal and the engine rpm increases but the vehicle speed does not, the clutch may need an adjustment or replacement. Here are some common issues that point to the clutch system as the culprit.

Manual Transmission Clutch Problem Signals

Chattering or Scraping If your clutch chatters when the clutch pedal is depressed, it could need something as simple as an adjustment. The worst-case scenario is a loss of clutch friction material from the disc’s surface. You may feel a vibration or pulsing in the clutch pedal.
Grinding This is a common sign of a clutch disc or throw-out bearing failure. Throw-out bearing replacement typically requires removing the transmission.
Rattling or Clunking A rattling noise may come from the clutch disc or a dual-mass flywheel within the flywheel. Replacement flywheels can cost between $400 and $1,000. Rattling can also indicate the shedding of clutch disc-facing material.

If the vehicle needs a new clutch, the repair commonly includes replacing the clutch disc(s), pressure plate, and the throw-out bearing. The flywheel may also need resurfacing or replacement, as well as the pilot bearing or bushing. The cost for a new clutch can range from $1,000 to $3,000.

Manual Gearbox Woes

The reason we spent so much time on clutch diagnosis is that manual transmissions are typically less troublesome. As long as you maintain the proper fluid level and follow the manufacturer’s service recommendations, the most common problem plaguing the transmission gearbox is misuse of the clutch, which can cause the synchronizing collars to malfunction.

If your transmission won’t go into gear or pops out of gear while you’re driving down the road, it is probably a synchronization problem, which could lead to repairs involving shift forks, individual gears, and internal bearings. In this case, the repair cost can vary widely. One technician noted that he charges $800 for a manual transmission rebuild, plus parts. Some gear clusters could cost up to $500 each.

Automatic Transmissions

Automatic transmission issues are far more complex than manual systems due to the greater number of parts. These units contain about twice as many components and require careful assembly due to tight clearances and sophisticated electronics.

The first step is to check the transmission fluid level, if your vehicle has a transmission dipstick. Make sure your vehicle is on a level surface before measuring. Follow the procedure in your owner’s manual, which may require checking the fluid with the engine running and the transmission warmed to a specified temperature. The dipstick will show the proper fluid level range and may identify the required fluid type. If the fluid level is low, this could be the problem.

If you don’t see a dipstick under the hood, your transmission may use sealed fill and drain ports. If that’s the case, you’ll most likely need to visit a professional.

  • The vehicle does not move when it shifts into a forward gear

In extreme cases, the fluid may be so low that the vehicle will not move at all. Follow the steps above and add only the specified amount it the fluid is low. If the vehicle doesn’t move, seek the help of a pro.

  • The vehicle bucks and jerks when driving

This can result from transmission, engine, or electronic-control problems and should be diagnosed promptly. If there is a diagnostic code, a scanner may help identify the problem. A trip to the repair shop is in order.

  • Step Three: Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks in the extended position — generally toward the sky.

If you’re looking for a used car, you’re probably wanting to lower your costs, not add to them. But sometimes, we focus a little too much on the monthly payment and forget to dig deeper into some of the other fees and costs that can impact that number.

Not every fee is avoidable or negotiable, but knowing how they all add up to your final out-the-door price can help you strategize to lower that number even further. In times of economic headwinds and high inflation, every little bit saved helps.

Current Interest Rates on Used Car Loans

Perhaps the biggest behind-the-scenes finance cost is the interest rate. According to Bankrate, the average interest rate for a 48-month used car loan in July 2026 was 7.45% APR (annual percentage rate). However, this number will depend significantly on your credit score. Credit bureau Experian reported that in Q4 2025, average rates on a used car loan for super prime borrowers (those at the top of the credit-score scale with scores of 781-850) were 7.7%. For those with deep subprime credit scores lower than 500, that rate could grow as high as 21.85%.

Of course, interest rates will depend not only on your credit score, but also on your lender. Financing through a local credit union will almost always get you a better rate than financing through a dealership. Make sure that you are shopping several different lenders for the best rate before you commit.

What Difference Can the Interest Rate on Used Car Loans Make?

Finding the best interest rate on your used car loan can save you a chunk of change over the length of the loan. Using our Car Loan Payment Calculator, you can input a few different interest rates to determine their effect on monthly payments for the exact same vehicle.

Our example car is a 2022 Ford Bronco Sport with a 4-cylinder engine priced at $26,997, which we found among our Cars for Sale. We began with Bankrate’s current average interest rate of 7.45% for a 48-month loan with a 20% down payment of $5,399. So, in our example, we’re financing $21,598.

  • Loan Option 1: 7% APR — $517 per month for 48 months with a total interest paid of $3,227.
  • Loan Option 2: 7.45% APR — $522 per month for 48 months with a total interest paid of $3,444.
  • Loan Option 3: 8% APR — $527 per month for 48 months with a total interest paid of $3,711.

Although there’s only a few dollars’ difference between monthly installments, the extra interest paid does add up.

Sales Tax

The car dealer must pay a state sales tax on your vehicle purchase except in:

  • Delaware
  • New Hampshire
  • Montana
  • Alaska
  • Oregon

The dealer will pass this to you. This tax varies from state to state, and the rate may differ for vehicles from other commodities. Some local governments tack on a sales tax, as well. Your research should include determining which sales taxes are required.

At 8.25%, Nevada leads the nation in the highest tax rate on cars. Illinois (7.25%) and California (7.25%) follow. Sales tax adds to your bottom-line purchase price and will impact the amount of your loan and the total interest you will pay.

Note on purchasing a vehicle from out of state: Purchasing a vehicle out of state may add even more expense. You should pay the sales tax to the state where you live (if it assesses a vehicle sales tax). However, you may have to purchase a temporary registration in the state where the vehicle is purchased.

Registration and Licensing Fees

Registration and licensing fees vary wildly from one state to the next. Compared to the purchase price of the car itself, those fees probably won’t tack on too much, but don’t forget to wrap them into your budgeting. For example, in Arizona, you can register a car for a whopping $8 flat fee, but the vehicle license tax (VLT) in the state will be based on the car’s estimated value. Generally, a used car’s value is going to be lower than a new car’s, so fees will be lower as well.

Some states calculate fees by weight rather than car value or other factors. In these cases, a full-size pickup truck is likely going to cost a good amount more than a small sedan. Be diligent and understand the fees in your specific state before you make a final purchase.

Leasing Fees and Penalties

Leasing is entirely different from financing. Although leasing a used car isn’t all that common outside of certified pre-owned (CPO) purchases, there are used car leases. Our advice on interest rates still applies; however, in leasing terminology, interest is called the money factor and the figure is displayed differently. There will be sales tax and licensing fees, as well.

Leasing contracts have a long list of mandatory and seemingly unwarranted fees that you should aware off. Moreover, as you close out a lease, several potential penalties can add hundreds of dollars to the final bill.

The X-Pro Prestige is the least efficient Sportage trim in 2026. This is due to several factors. The main objective of the X-Pro trim is to be capable off-road, which is the exact opposite of what gets you maximum fuel efficiency. Firstly, while the tires are relatively small in diameter at 17 inches, the all-terrain compound makes them less efficient, especially on highways and city driving. All-wheel drive also does not help here, as the engine has to work harder to send power to all four wheels. While the ground clearance remains the same as the other AWD variants at 8.3 inches, the extra cladding makes the X-Pro less aerodynamic on highways.

Since the X-pro is the top of the line variant of the turbocharged SUV as well, it gets all the technology and convenience kits as standard. This increases the overall weight of the SUV, making the engine work harder to gain and maintain speed. If you want the most capable Kia Sportage that can go anywhere, the X-Pro is the trim for you. The interior brings manually adjustable cloth front seats, with a 60/40 rear bench that drops down to open up 70.4 cubic feet of cargo hold. The RAV4 boasts two large screens, a 10.9-inch multimedia display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Hill Start, Trailer Sway, and Blind Spot assistance are all included with the base model as well.

Earning a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, the RAV4 continues to be one of the strongest vehicles in its class for depreciation and high value retention. Reports show the RAV4 to experience only 25–28% depreciation after five years of ownership.

Real Risks

The numbers are hard to ignore. NoHeatStroke.org reports more than 1,000 pediatric vehicular heatstroke deaths since 1998, averaging about 37 each year. There were 33 deaths in 2025 and several already reported in 2026. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also ranks heatstroke among the leading causes of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths for children.

Young kids are especially at risk because their bodies heat up more quickly than adults’. They may not be able to get out, call for help, or even understand what’s happening. What feels like a quick stop can become life-threatening in minutes.

Most cases fall into a few patterns. Sometimes a caregiver forgets a child in the back seat, often during a change in routine or a stressful day. In other cases, a child climbs into an unlocked vehicle and becomes trapped. And sometimes, a child is knowingly left behind for a short errand, with the danger underestimated.

Built-In Reminders

Rear occupant alert systems can add an extra layer of protection. Now common in most new vehicles, these systems remind drivers to check the back seat before exiting — either with a dashboard prompt or, in more advanced versions, sensors that detect movement and trigger alerts. Automakers have expanded the feature in response to rising hot-car deaths, and while it’s not foolproof, it can help interrupt the moment of distraction that leads to many tragedies. Safety experts recommend leaving the system turned on and treating it as a consistent reminder to look before you lock.

Simple Habits That Help

The good news is that these deaths are preventable. A few small habits can make a big difference:

  • Always check the back seat before locking up — even if you’re sure it’s empty.
  • Put something essential that you need (phone, wallet, work badge, or even a shoe) in the back seat.
  • Use a visual reminder, like moving a stuffed animal to the front when your child is in the back seat.
  • Ask childcare providers to call if your child doesn’t arrive as expected.
  • Keep your car locked and keys out of reach so kids can’t get in on their own.
